Henio Żytomirsk was born to Jewish parents in Lublin in 1933. Henio and his family were forced to move to a ghetto in 1941. Due to a letter dated May, 22, 1942, it is known that Henio was with his father, Shmuel. Henio's fate is unknown, but it presumed that he died before 1943, as his father's last letter, dated March 19, 1943, he does not mention Henio at all. Henio's legacy lives on due to the "Letters to Henio" project that takes place annually on April 19th-the Polish schools day of Holocaust Remembrance. School children take part of educational workshops in which they write a letter to Henio, slip the letters into a postbox (which happens to be where the last picture of Henio was taken), and participate in a walking tour of the city, stopping at places significant to Henio's life, such as his house and where he lived in the ghetto. Random passersby are also encouraged to write letters to Henio and to participate in the tour. The goal of "Letters to Henio" is to show the citizens of Lublin what the Extermination of Jews looked like through the eyes of one little boy.
